The Skyline Barney Cage is ideal for the smallest of pets, such as hamsters, mice and dwarf hamsters, thanks to the small grid spacing. A high bottom tray, which should be filled with a thick layer of litter, promotes the natural digging behavior of these small rodents and also keeps the environment clean. The large door on the top and the 2 side doors allow light access to your animals and all corners of the cage. The equipment includes a platform, a ladder and a wooden house as well as a plastic running wheel. As the wooden elements are made of natural plywood and birch wood, gnawing on them is harmless. Cleaning the cage is child’s play by removing the fastening clips from the base tray. We recommend that you provide your pet with an outdoor enclosure for daily exercise. Please note: Please check the cage equipment regularly for damage and replace it if it is defective or if it is gnawed on in large dimensions, as otherwise injury to the animals cannot be ruled out.

Good to know

  • Match bar spacing to the smallest animal: mice and dwarf hamsters escape through very small gaps.
  • Choose solid floors and shelves rather than wire mesh to protect feet.
  • Pick floor area over height for rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters, and height plus levels for rats and chinchillas.

Common questions

Can I keep a hamster in a cage made for mice or rats?

Possibly, but check the floor space and bar spacing. Hamsters need lots of floor area and deep bedding more than height, while rat cages are often tall with wide bar spacing that a small hamster could slip through. A large tank or a dedicated hamster cage with a deep base is usually the safer choice.

Are wire-bottom cages bad for small animals?

Wire mesh floors can cause sore feet and trap toes, particularly in rabbits, guinea pigs and chinchillas. Choose cages with solid floors and shelves. If an existing cage has mesh levels, cover them with a solid board or fleece.
