Please be sure to follow the guidelines set out by Rabbit Welfare Association, PDSA and RSPCA regarding recommended living areas for small pets. As well as a suitable hutch or cage, your pet also needs a separate, secured run to give them a safe space to exercise. Please take a look at our range of runs here. zooplus recommends that all outdoor rabbit hutches are positioned in a sheltered location, protected from potential predators and shaded on sunny days.

Good to know

  • Check the cage dimensions against welfare guidance for your species instead of relying on the label.
  • Match bar spacing to the smallest animal: mice and dwarf hamsters escape through very small gaps.
  • Choose solid floors and shelves rather than wire mesh to protect feet.

Common questions

Are wire-bottom cages bad for small animals?

Wire mesh floors can cause sore feet and trap toes, particularly in rabbits, guinea pigs and chinchillas. Choose cages with solid floors and shelves. If an existing cage has mesh levels, cover them with a solid board or fleece.

Is a 120 cm cage big enough for a rabbit?

Not on its own. The Rabbit Welfare Association and Fund recommends at least 3 m x 2 m of continuous space, 1 m high, for a pair of rabbits. A 120 cm cage can work as a base or bedroom if it opens on to a large run or a rabbit-proofed room.
