Good to know
- Avoid pine and cedar shavings, as their aromatic oils can irritate a bird’s airways.
- Spread a thin, even layer of litter; a deep layer just hides droppings and wastes product.
- Spot-clean under the main perches every day or two and change the whole tray at least weekly.
Common questions
Can I use cat litter in a bird cage?
Clumping clay cat litter is not suitable, because it is dusty and can cause problems if a bird swallows it. Some plain wood or paper pellet litters sold for cats and small pets are similar to bird litters, but check that they are unscented and low in dust before using them.
What is the best bedding for a budgie cage?
Sand sheets, beech wood chips and plain paper are all suitable for budgies. Sand sheets are quick to change, wood chips absorb smell well, and paper makes it easiest to check droppings. Avoid pine, cedar and anything scented or dusty.
