Good to know
- If your cat avoids a hooded tray, try taking the lid off before changing anything else.
- Top-entry boxes are not suitable for kittens, elderly cats or cats with stiff joints.
- Replace carbon filters in hooded trays on the maker’s schedule, and replace the tray once it is badly scratched.
Common questions
Why has my cat stopped using the litter tray?
Common causes are a dirty or too small tray, a change of litter, a new location, a lid the cat dislikes or stress from another cat. Medical problems are also a frequent cause, so see a vet if your cat strains, goes often or passes blood. A male cat straining without passing urine is an emergency.
Is a hooded or open litter tray better?
Many cats prefer open trays, which do not trap smells and let them see around them. Hooded trays keep litter and odour contained for people and suit some cats that like privacy. If your cat hesitates to use a hooded tray, remove the lid and see if that helps.
