Good to know
- Check the label for ‘complete’ before feeding a wet food as the whole diet. Toppers and extras are often complementary.
- To compare protein with dry food, divide the protein figure by (100 minus moisture) and multiply by 100.
- Lift any uneaten wet food after the meal rather than leaving it down, especially in warm weather.
Common questions
How long does opened wet dog food last in the fridge?
Check the label, but most manufacturers say a day or two. Keep it covered or in a lidded container rather than open in the tin. If it smells off or has changed colour, throw it away.
Why does wet dog food have so little protein compared with dry?
Because most of a tin is water. The analysis on the label is given ‘as fed’, including the moisture. Convert both foods to dry matter to compare them properly, and wet food often comes out as high or higher in protein.
